Subject:         the Situation of IDPs community in Qardho Report

 

Qardho is the third largest urban place in Puntland State of Somalia with relatively a considerable population that very high portion or over 65% of the population economically involves to livestock herding and petty trades that women is mostly manage. Therefore, the employment opportunity for inhabitants is limited in the town.

 

Qardho town has hosted many IDPs families from different parts of

Somalia

as a safe heaven since early 1991. Although the IDPs influxes was depending on the situation of conflicts and lack stability that exists long period in South, central and other south west and Juba-land areas of Somalia as well as Zone five of Ethiopia’s ethnic Somali regions that many IDPs crossed the borders and come to Puntland state of Somalia, specifically, the reer shabeelle and other Somali-Bantu origin community who resettled in Qardho and other main urban places of Puntland state Somalia, after they fled from tribal conflicts and other natural disasters that affected to their livelihood sources  in their homes origins.

The current needs of Qardho IDPs:

There are different needs of IDPs in Qardho and the areas needing urgent actions are:

  • Conduct official registration and census of all IDPs in Qardho district
  • Emergency food supply to 2500 households IDPs and poorer urban dwellers in Qardho.
  • Water and sanitation facilities in IDPs settlements
  • Protection for shelter, safety and security, health and education  for all IDPs and other vulnerable groups

 

In the other hand, the IDPs in Qardho needs long term interventions to create sustainable livelihood sources through introduction of skills and innovations of employment opportunities. IDPs community has very high potentiality of absorbing marketable skills in which they could earn income from local markets.
