TOOLS FOR HUMANITY - Vocational and Leadership Institute Summary: Established in 2007, The Tools for Humanity Institute (T4HI), a project of Tools for Humanity's organization. The mission of the Vocational and Leadership Institute is to empower current and emerging leaders to create high impact of community economic development CED, human capital development and social change. Tools for Humanity Institute- the School for Post War Vocational Skills and Social Entrepreneurship is a 'technical business school' for Africa and African Post conflict communities in urban and rural community development sector, as well as African private and public workforce technical training and capacity building for local NGOs. T4HI programs will made accessible to a wide range of youth, micro-leaders at community level, local government and NGOs in Africa through subsidized rates by donar agencies, UN, international NGOs and philanthropic partners as well as fundraising activities. Training and capacity building programs will be held in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia(Somaliland/Puntland State of Somalia and South/Central Somalia). T4HI believes that social movements and social justice will triumph through skill development, strong technical know-how and inspired micro leadership training with poverty eradication approach. The Institute also has a strong commitment to transformation and working youth groups in IDPs/Refugees camps in Africa ( Like Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia/Somaliland). Our goals are: To train Africans and strengthening their skills, local food production and local organizational capacity to build 21 century workforce in the private and public sector development. To facilitate an integrated training in Eco-Tourism, solar and Geothormal through Social and Cooperative Enterprise as Poverty Reduction model. Youth Training and Post War Recovery Technical Skill Development
Technical Assistance and Post War Recovery Training : is special training and technical assistance service for youth and ex. child soldiers who had devastating affects on violence and inhumane acts in their daily life many part of Africa.
Using the lessons learned from ex. war-torn countries Tools for Humanity and its affiliates will address the following needs:
Community/ Youth Training
- Identify and verify unique requirements of youth/community
- Understand traditional and appropriate means of conflict resolution skills
- Expand youth non-voilance and peace building leadership skills
- Establish income-generating skills and self-sufficiency
- Dynamics of team building and decision making processes in post conflict communities
- Strategic planning, organizational talents and community inventory
Research Program
Research at the Tools for Humanity Institute is focused on reducing poverty, economic inequalities and humanizing the health, education, live hood and social well-being of disadvantaged urban and rural populations. We focus in particular on the systemic social, cultural and living conditions that create economic and health inequality. We inquire about to develop awareness of the collective resolve of issues and concerns about programs and services unapproachable, and to identify interventions, strategies and policies that counter their impact and narrow the gap.
Our current research priorities are in economic rights, housing and homelessness, social exclusion, equity employment and health system transformation, income inequalities, and building capacity and advance in the non-profit community sector.
T4H undertake specific research projects in local or international. T4H Institute also supports the development of community-based research (CBR) through funding and working with community organizations to conduct research and influence policy international development.
T4H Institute’s research is policy and practice important – listening carefully community based voices on creating social change through public policy or practice solutions.

What kind of program is it?

This program is a nationwide initiative in Canada/ USA and international run by volunteers, who collect, refurbish and redistribute second hand tools for the benefit of vocational training schools, small-scale cooperative projects and local trades in developing countries (Specially Africa).

Tools for Humanity is introduced this innovative program early 1990s to assist and mobilize youth of ages 15-35 years, who are ex.Gangs in Canada and USA.

In Africa Ex.Child soldiers, Refugee students or out-of-school and Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Africa(Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Somalia(South/Central)Somaliland/Puntland)

The leadership and vocational education opportunity program is designed to facilitate a discussion and solid foundation around social enterprise and cooperative development for youth groups. This programs will assist these individuals with their families for accessing services relating to their education and future employment needs, The goal of the program is a holistic integrated vocational technical training and self-help work directly to youth groups and to help balance a solid foundation both future leadership needs and non-violence cultural values. Tools for Humanity have about 3 collection points (Edmonton and Toronto ), Canada and US where companies and individuals donate their used tools. The project activities are financed through fundraising, sponsorships and private donations.

T4H mainly provides hand tools and small 220-volts electric equipment for the following vocational technical schools, local trades:

Carpentry and joinery, Metalwork and goldsmiths
Auto mechanics, Building and construction
Sewing, shoemaking, electrical works

Mission Statement of this program

To deliver quality used tools for vocational technical training, small scale enterprises, cooperatives (women and youth), local trades community self help centres in developing countries with the aim to assist people to become self-reliant and earn an independent income.

To contribute sustainable development projects to Africa by making available technical skills and used tools and machinery to meet MDG

To enhance and raise awareness in Canada and USA about MDG and partnership through skill development, cooperation, recycling tools and community economic development participation.

Which kind of projects can apply?

T4H assist local initiatives that lead to MDG , sustainable development and community economic development. In particular locally organized projects focusing on gender oriented projects, vocational training, income generation, and creation of employment, as well as marginalized groups, co-operatives, social enterprises, ecological awareness and environmental protection projects.

T4H will encourage projects in which the target group itself takes the initiative and committed active in initiation, preparation, decision-making and implementation of the project.
