Summary:

 

Established in 2007, The Tools for Humanity Institute (T4HI), a project of Tools for Humanity's organization. The mission of the Vocational and Leadership Institute is to empower current and emerging leaders to create high impact of community economic development CED, human capital development and social change.

Tools for Humanity Institute- the School for Post War Vocational Skills and Social Entrepreneurs will be a 'technical business school' for African Post conflict communities, African urban and rural community development sector and African private and public  sector;

T4HI programs will made accessible to a wide range of  youth, micro-leaders at community level, local government and NGOs in Africa  through subsidized rates by donar agencies, UN, international NGOs and philanthropic partners as well  as fundraising activities. Programs will be held in Djibouti  and Somalia as pilot project  for first phase.

T4HI believes that social movements will triumph through skilled, strategic and inspired leadership.  The Institute also has a strong commitment to working with Immigrant / Refugees in Canada  and IDPs/Refugees in Africa.

To train Africans and strengthening their local organizations working in the private and public sector

  

To facilitate an integrated training in Eco-Tourism, solar and  Geothormal through Social and Cooperative

Enterprise as Poverty Reduction method

 

Tools for Humanity Institute :

T4H is a 'technical business school for African middle and low-income communities. T4HI is becoming one of Canada's leading vocational and leadership institute to post conflict communities in areas of creativity, innovation, technical studies and entrepreneurship. T4HI’s Vocational technical training and Social Entrepreneurship skill development will target to African Post conflict countries both public and private schools, Special training in conflict resolution through social enterprise and capacity building for private and public agencies.

 

  • Post War Recovery Youth Training and Technical Skills

    Post War Recovery Training and Technical Assistance is special training and technical assistance service  for youth and ex. child soldiers who had devastating affects on violence and inhumane acts in their daily life many part of Africa.

    RT &TA for youth and child soldiers will start with an assessment of post war effects and counseling support services for war trauma children and their families. It will consist of a survey of skill assessment and their social integration needs. A community assessment will follow. The primary objectives of the recovery training and technical assistance is to offer a practical solutions and job skills training to facilitate the rehabilitation and reintegration of war-affected youth, orphans, widows,  internally displaced people and refugees into their communities. The long tern strategic objectives of training is to increase the capacity of the community organizations, the Local and International non-governmental (NGOs), public and private sector in order to improve the quality of life for those served.

    Using the lessons learned from ex. war-torn countries Tools for Humanity and its affiliates will address the following needs:

    - To have youth stop doing violent acts and to encourage them to diminish violence present in their society.
    - To enrich their general knowledge and to be more aware of what's happening around them.
    - To make them interested in technical skills and have expressed their own opinion.
    - Make a change on their way of thinking and attitudes towards stereotypes formed other communities.
    - To show that everyone possess equal rights- Promote awareness to youth about the way others live and learn.
    - To build friendships between communities, thus prevent conflicts between these communities.
    - Create opportunities for youth who would not normally have the chance to participate in peaceful society.
    - Create bonds between schools, students and local businesses in neighboring communities that would not normally exist.
    - Immerse youth in a positive situation with other youth who they otherwise may not have had the chance to meet other then war or conflicts.
    - Inspire youth to return to their school, master some skills, build their dream and discuss what they can achieve their future.

    Community/ Youth Training

    • Identify and verify unique requirements of youth/community
    • Understand traditional and appropriate means of technical skills
    • Expand youth leadership participation
    • Establish income-generating skills and self-sufficiency
    • Dynamics of team building and decision making processes
    • Strategic planning, organizational and community resource connections
    • Compile skills, talents and community inventory

    3. Metal and Wedding Work
    4. Masonry and Painting Technicians
    5. Shoemaking  and Leather Treatments
    6.     Tailoring and Upholstery
    7. Carpentry and Construction
    8. AC  and Refrigerators Technicians
    9.     Basic Computer and  A+  Technicians
    10.     Printing, Editing and Video production

What kind of program is it?

 

This program is a nationwide initiative in Canada/ USA  and international run by volunteers, who collect, refurbish and redistribute second hand tools for the benefit of vocational training schools, small-scale cooperative projects and local trades in developing countries (Specially Africa).

 

Tools for Humanity is introduced this innovative program early 1990s to assist and mobilize youth of ages 15-35 years, who are ex. Child soldiers, Refugee students or out-of-school and Internally Displaced People (IDP) in

Somalia

. The leadership and vocational education opportunity program is designed to facilitate a discussion and solid foundation around social enterprise and cooperative development for youth groups. This programs will assist these individuals with their families for accessing services relating to their education and future employment needs, The goal of the program is a holistic integrated vocational technical training and self-help work directly to youth groups and to help balance a solid foundation both future leadership needs and non-violence cultural values. Tools for Humanity have about 3 collection points (Edmonton and Toronto )

and Djibouti-coming soon) where companies and individuals donate their used tools. The project activities are financed through fundraising, sponsorships and private donations.

 

What kind of tools?

T4H mainly provides hand tools and small 220-volts electric equipment for the following vocational technical schools, local trades:

  • Carpentry and joinery, Metalwork and goldsmiths
  • Auto mechanics, Building and construction
  • Sewing, shoemaking, electrical works

Mission Statement of this program

To deliver quality used tools for vocational technical training, small scale enterprises, cooperatives (women and youth), local trades community self help centres in developing countries with the aim to assist people to become self-reliant and earn an independent income.

 

To contribute sustainable development projects to Africa by making available technical skills and used tools and machinery to meet  MDG

To enhance and raise awareness in

Canada  and USA  about MDG

and partnership through skill development, cooperation, recycling tools and community economic development participation.

Which kind of projects can apply?

T4H assist local initiatives that lead to

MDG  , sustainable development and community economic development.

In particular locally organized projects focusing on gender oriented projects, vocational training, income generation, and creation of employment, as well as  marginalized groups, co-operatives, social enterprises, ecological awareness and environmental protection projects.

T4H will encourage projects in which the target group itself takes the initiative and committed active in initiation, preparation, decision-making and implementation of the project.
